Employee Spotlight: Rachel Barnes

Our Employee Spotlight series aims to highlight the diverse, talented and ambitious individuals that make our company a success. Today, we are celebrating our Director of New Business Development, Rachel Barnes, who has made a serious splash since joining the Uni-Structures team over 9 years ago!

Can you explain your journey here at Uni-Structures, from when you first started working here until now?

Gosh, my journey here has been all over the place (in a good way)! Growing up with the USI family has taught me so much. From sweeping/cleaning to helping my mom file to terminating the phone cables for the phones we use now… I have worn a lot of different hats. I first learned to weld when I was about 12 years old.  I worked on the floor for about 4-5 years, on and off during school semesters and full time during the summer.

During that time, I learned to use all of the machinery on the floor. My primary responsibility was building crates/loading our trucks for product installation. It was a battle on my dads part to even get me off the floor, I loved the fast-paced work environment and enjoyed learning something new every day. Once I graduated from KSU I somewhat reluctantly applied for a sales support role and the rest, as they say, is history.

Will you briefly describe your current role?

My current role is Director of Business Development. My primary responsibility in this role is to maintain and cultivate long-term business partnerships with a variety of brands, franchisees, and owner/operators.

What is your favorite part about your job?

Man, not an easy question to answer! I guess I would say that I really enjoy getting to know and help all of the different customers we have. I am very proud of the family we have here and love educating customers about what we do.

What are you most proud of from your time at Uni-Structures?

My knowledge of the industry and our products. Growing up in the industry and on the floor definitely provided me with a unique opportunity to be super knowledgeable about even the smallest details of our products and how they are built, which is something I would not trade for anything.

Three words to best describe you:

Rachel and her GSP Jepp!

Tenacious (and by that I mean stubborn), enthusiastic, and compassionate.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

I am a pretty active, wanderlust type person so I like to work out, travel, and go on adventures (especially with my GSP Jepp)! Over the summer, Jepp and I hiked a 5 mile trail and he was the perfect companion… didn’t complain once. I also enjoy learning and doing new things. My favorites to date have been snowboarding in Lake Tahoe, swimming with manatees in Mexico, and ziplining in Banning Mills.

What is one thing you can’t live without?

My family, for sure (Jepp included). These past two years of my life were unfortunately riddled with loss, but also a major gain of a nephew so it really shifted my focus on what is truly important. I would do anything for my family, fiancé, and pup.

What is something that few people know about you?

Something that few people know about me is that I participated in, and even won a few, pageants as a kid. Little Miss Cobb County in 2001 was probably the biggest one.

Where is your favorite place to be?

The beach, anywhere on the beach.
